YATE will honour the country’s patron saint this weekend in one of the biggest celebrations of its kind in the region.
The town’s heritage centre is hosting a day of family fun and traditional English entertainment tomorrow (Saturday, April 26 10.30am-4.30pm).
Performances, stalls, games and activities will take place inside Yate Heritage Centre, on Church Road, on St Mary’s Green outside and at St Mary’s Church next door and the neighbouring Lawns pub.
There will be all styles of music on offer to entertain the crowds and dancing, a Punch and Judy show, theatre workshops, side stalls and refreshments.
Community heritage officer David Hardill said: “Yate and District Heritage Centre once again hosts one of the main community events of the year, the 2014 St George celebrations.
“It will be a big, lively community event with all day entertainment, numerous family activities and stalls plus refreshments from St Mary's Church and the Lawns Pub.”
He added: “There will be a full itinerary of English style music and dance and a whole host of activities for families to try, including craft activities and a myriad of games and history stalls.
“Highlights of the day include Rag Morris, Morris dancing, Spaniel in the Works theatre, folk singing sessions, brass band performances, various school performers, Punch and Judy and storytelling from St George and the Dragon.
“This wonderful event also involves local schools participating in our own St George Rugby tournament at St Mary's School and St Mary's Church will be hosting tours throughout the day.”
Refreshments will include bacon butties courtesy of the Friends of Yate Heritage Centre. The event has had funding from both Yate Town Council and South Gloucestershire Council. Contact Yate Heritage Centre for more details on 01454 862200.
