A MAIN road through Frampton Cotterell is to remain closed until Sunday, more than a week after it was due to reopen.

Church Road will stay shut to all traffic until Sunday (April 27), South Gloucestershire Council announced today.

THe authority said: "Following discussions with Bristol Water we have agreed to extend the Church Road closure in Frampton Cotterell for two days until 2pm on Sunday, April 27.

"This will allow crews to fill and close two large holes in the highway, which would otherwise need to have been done during the following week and would have required extensive roadside barriers and traffic signals.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused during these essential works which will allow the planned replacement of Church Road bridge over the summer."

The road was initially closed for three works to allow for preparatory works for the replacement of a road bridge on Church Road. The council then delayed its opening until 5pm today (April 25) because of 'unforseen underground obstructions' which meant work to divert utility cables was more difficult.

Once the road is reopened it will remain in use until July 22 when it will be closed again for six works whilst the crumbling bridge is replaced.
