Eight escaped cows ran loose on residential roads in South Gloucestershire for two hours.

The herd stampeded into people's gardens in  Bradley Stoke on Friday afternoon.

The animals broke free when a tractor and trailer transporting the cattle overturned at the junction of Winterbourne Road and Old Gloucester Road shortly before 12.15pm.

They ran more than half a mile to the quiet cul-de-sac of Juniper Way, damaging several cars along the way. One Vauxhall Corsa was left with a dented bonnet.

A police officer was injured when one of the animals ran into him as he was helping to round the cows up.

He was taken to hospital with bruising but was not thought to have been seriously hurt. An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman said the officer had escaped more serious injury by wearing body armour.

The cattle were rounded up by 3pm.
