DURSLEY Volunteer Centre is closing after 10 years of co-ordinating helpers to take part in hundreds of community projects.

As a result of cuts in funding the centre above Dursley Library on May Lane is closing its doors, with the volunteer centre now operating district-wide from Stroud.

The centre has been open for over 10 years to provide the community with information and advice about all aspects of volunteering and with over 400 opportunities on the database has assisted in finding the right opportunity for many people.

As a result of government cut backs to funding, Stroud District Council has had to review every item of expenditure and the centre has been the latest casualty.

The nearest contact point will now be in Stroud, although potential volunteers can still use the online facility on www.do-it.org.uk

Dursley co-ordinator Mary Hurst has been made redundant on the move.

A spokesman for Volunteer Community Action said: “Mary has done great work at the volunteer centre since June 2010, putting local volunteers in touch with those in need of help both individuals and organisations which has been very rewarding for both volunteers and those helped.

“Mary leaves behind a very successful knitting circle which meets at the Dursley Library every Thursday between 10am and 12noon, providing much needed blankets and clothes for charities.

“We wish Mary all the best for the future, she is looking to continue to provide for volunteers and organisations and would like to hear about any local opportunities to do this.”

From Thursday, May 22, Ms Hurst can be found on Thursdays between 10.30am and 1pm giving volunteer advice at the GL11 Project’s cafe in Fairmead, Cam.
