Rail users faced severe disruption as the line between Swindon and Gloucester was closed while emergency services worked at the scene.

First Great Western posted a statement on its website warning passengers that train services may be delayed up to an hour, diverted at short notice or cancelled and that Kemble, Stroud and Stonehouse would not be served.

Cross Country services were conveying passengers between Bristol Temple Meads and Cheltenham Spa in both directions and arrangements were made for First Great Western rail tickets to be accepted on those journeys.

Replacement road transport services were conveying passengers between Swindon and Gloucester in both directions and very limited replacement road transport was calling at Kemble, Stroud and Stonehouse.
