FAMILIES got to experience some Brazilian carnival fun during the half-term as Dursley gears up for the World Cup.

Over 200 people attended the free community fun day at The Chantry Centre on Long Street which was organised by World Jungle, with further events planned in the run up to the final.

With a wide selection of activities on offer ranging from carnival arts, table tennis, skittles and circus fun, to a samba drumming workshop and performance from the Bath School of Samba, the afternoon proved a big hit.

Event organiser, Ben Ward from World Jungle, said it was a fantastic start for their All in One Rhythm project – a special programme of family events and workshops themed around Brazilian Carnival and the World Cup.

“The sun even came out for us and we were able to hold the Samba Drumming Workshop outside in the centre’s secret garden,” he said.

“Our aim is to use the FIFA World Cup in Brazil this June and July as a springboard to developing a healthier, happier, more active community; creating a wave of positive community action and making this World Cup an exciting family event - even for those who don’t like football!”

The project was boosted thanks to funding from the National Lottery’s Awards for All programme.

Mr Ward added that comments from people attending were all very positive and many were impressed with the Chantry Centre itself as a great resource for the whole community to benefit from.

Louise Mee, from Dursley, said: “Well done to World Jungle! What a great afternoon of fun and wonderful community spirit. Lovely atmosphere and brilliant use of the Chantry centre. Thanks for organising it all.”

The next All in one Rhythm family fun day is planned for Saturday, June 14 from 1pm to 4pm.

The centre will also be home to a live screening of England’s first game against Italy on Tuesday, June 24, from 5pm to 8pm, which is open to all families.

On Saturday, July 12 there is to be a big carnival party and barbecue at the centre, with a World Cup Final fun day planned for Sunday, July 13 from 3pm to 7pm.
