YOUNGSTERS in Thornbury jetted off to different countries each day – but all within the school gates.
Christ The King Catholic Primary School focused on other ways of life during a special culture week from Monday, May 19 to Friday, May 23.
Children from each class had a more exotic start to their school days by going through their own version of airport security – including handing in their handmade paper passports.
They then sat in the ‘departure lounge’ until their flights were called, when they went and ‘boarded’ in the playground and headed off to their country, or classroom.
Each class studied a different country during the week and had the chance to swap around and travel to other countries, or classrooms, to learn about other places too.
The innovative event was rounded off with the school’s very own version Great British Bake Off on the Friday.
The children brought in cakes from home inspired by the different cultures they had been learning about for their ‘global’ bake off.
The culinary delights were then entered into a competition, judging both the taste and appearance of the baked goods.
School administrator Louise Wilson said: “The children were so excited, they loved the experience and we feel that it really brings a different dimension to learning about other countries and their cultures.”
The cake sale raised £160 for the NSPCC and Childline, chosen by the children.
