SCORES of people were enjoying the World Cup with a twist in Dursley last weekend.

As well as screening the England football team’s first game against Italy on Saturday, the Chantry Centre on Long Street played host to a number of activities for those not necessarily interested in the beautiful game.

Organised by community group World Jungle, families and children took part in the Brazilian-themed event by making carnival masks, taking part in drumming and samba dancing as well as try some circus skills.

There was even a popular football quiz for the dads to puzzle over before the match.

The group is using the FIFA World Cup in Brazil as a springboard to develop a healthier, happier and more active local community and spokeswoman Louise Amato said the event went down really well.

“We had lot of feedback from people saying it was good to have an event on their doorstep to get involved in and with lots of activities for children to get families together,” she said.

“Not everyone is interested in the World Cup so we wanted to do something different.”

The project was boosted thanks to funding from the National Lottery’s Awards for All programme and the centre's next fun day event as well as a live screening of England’s final group game against Costa Rica will be on Tuesday, June 24, from 5pm to 8pm, which is open to all families.

On Saturday, July 12 there is to be a big carnival party and barbecue at the centre, with a World Cup Final fun day planned for Sunday, July 13 from 3pm to 7pm.
