SKATEBOARDERS, scooter and BMX riders will test their skills in the annual Skate Fest in Thornbury.

The competition on Saturday, June 28, has been organised by the town's StreetSpace, a team of volunteers who work in the community to build positive relationships with local youngsters.

People of all ages and abilities can have a go in the contest, whether they have been riding for years or are so new to the activity that they have only learnt one trick.

It is also hoped there will be plenty of people going along to cheer on the competitors, who have the chance to win prizes and other goodies by taking part.

The event will be held at Thornbury Skate Park, behind the town's leisure centre, from 1pm-8pm. Although there will be a £3 competition entry fee, admission to the park will be free.

Money raised from the event will go towards ongoing maintenance of the park.

Organisers said there would be plenty of food and drink available, with DJs performing, a number of family friendly activities planned and a variety of stalls set up. They also want to encourage more young people to use the skate park, make it a place to meet their friends and enjoy an active outdoor pursuit.

Youth worker Dan Potter said: "It's a great way to encourage self-belief, bring people together and have fun."

Thornbury StreetSpace is a local branch of a nationwide scheme and is led by Mr Potter, a community youth worker for Thornbury Baptist Church.

It is supported by Thornbury Churches Together, the Magnox nuclear company's socio economic scheme, South Gloucestershire Council, Thornbury Lions and the town's Round Table.

Its main purpose is to work with teenagers who are considered to be "at risk" or who don't get involved with any youth activities or provision. Mr Potter also carries out one-to-one mentoring with students at The Castle and Marlwood schools to help them fulfil their potential.
