TENNIS players welcomed visitors to an open day in Thornbury as part of a campaign to get more people playing.

The event was hosted by Thornbury Tennis Club for the Great British Tennis Weekend scheme, which involves free coaching being given to people of all ages and abilities at venues around the country.

Among those who went along to the Thornbury courts on the Mundy Playing Fields was the town's MP Steve Webb, who was shown the club's facilities and learnt more about plans to refurbish the clubhouse.

The club received a grant of £50,000 from the Sport England Lottery Fund, with support from Mr Webb, for the project and the club hopes to invite him back next spring once the work has been done.

Despite intermittent rain, there was plenty of enthusiasm for the tennis sessions run on the day.

Anyone who missed the event and would like to see the club's courts can do so on Saturday when they will be open as part of Thornbury carnival.

More information is also available on the club's website.
