OLYMPIC swimmer Adam Whitehead is diving into a fun day at Yate Leisure Centre this summer.

The former Team GB breaststroke swimmer, who competed at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, is now a mentor and has worked with the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust to help inspire and support young people.

Adam, 34, will be giving a tutorial to young swimmers at Yate Leisure Centre on Friday, August 1 (1.30-4pm).

The event is part of a national campaign by Australian swimwear brand Zoggs called Oceans of Fun Day, which aims to give seven to 14-year-old a chance to experience different aquatic sports from mini water polo, synchronised swimming and fast swimming.

Adam will be helping to mentor youngsters and encourage people to try more diverse aquatic sports.

Mark Crutchley, chief executive of Circadian Trust which runs Yate Leisure Centre, said: “Since the Olympics in 2012 it is incredible to see the impact that all the sporting achievements have had on raising the awareness and importance of sport and healthy past-times.

“Health and fitness is high on the political agenda. However, many people in the UK still find accessing sport difficult and we are proud to run a diverse and interesting sports programme. The Zoggs’ Oceans of Fun Day campaigns are the perfect way to inspire the younger generation to get involved in aquatic sports.”

Zoggs’ marketing and PR manager David Annand said: “For us, this is about introducing aquatic sports that many children will not have had the chance to experience.

“Success for us will be seeing the children who take part continue enjoying the freedom, fun and skills regular swimming and aquatic sports can bring.”

A morning session will be held at Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre (9am-12noon) followed by the session in Yate. Children taking part must be aged seven to 14 and be able to swim a minimum of 25 metres.
