AN investigation has been launched after thieves tried to steal money from a cash machine in Chipping Sodbury.
Police said there was an attempt to break into an ATM at the Waitrose store in Chipping Sodbury in the early hours of this morning (Thursday, July 17).
Police and fire crews were called at 2.20am when a worker arrived at the store and found the external cash machine damaged and smoking.
Fire crews put out the fire and an Avon and Somerset Constabulary crime scene investigator has examined the area.
Officers believe the cash machine was attacked shortly before 1am. Despite setting the ATM alight the thieves were unable to gain access and made off empty-handed.
DC Tracey Ormand said: “Anyone who has any information which could help our enquiries into this incident can get in touch through our website or by calling 101 quoting reference 73566/14.
“Alternatively call the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. They never ask your name or trace your call.”
