A VOLUNTEER centre in Yate is appealing to local people to give up some of their time for a good cause, even if it is just five minutes.

Volunteer Centre Yate, based in Yate Library, is promoting micro volunteering, a new form of help anyone and everyone can give at home as well as in person.

Centre manager Carole Zorzo said: “Many people think that they simply have no time to volunteer, but that needn’t be the case, as even going online for a charity and writing a campaign email or taking part in a survey, is volunteering.

“Home- based volunteering can also act as tasters to more volunteering and to show the good that even five minutes can do.”

The centre is hosting a promotional event on Monday, September 1 (10am-12noon) to show that volunteering can even be done wearing pyjamas.

Staff supported web-based micro volunteering organisation Help from Home with its annual promotion day in March and Julia Bernau, one of the centre’s volunteers, wanted to hold an event of its own.

The event is being held in Yate Library where there will be tea, coffee, biscuits and cakes for participants and people will get the chance to take part in online volunteering on the day and given information on how they can take this forward.

Opportunities for people who can sew and knit are also available and the volunteer centre is also collecting hand-made cards for a group that sends cards to RAF personnel serving overseas. If you would like to participate and donate a card please email or phone the volunteer centre for a factsheet, as cards must not be over a certain size.

Anyone is welcome to come along to the micro volunteering event, register by August 26 calling 01454 324102 or emailing carole@volunteercentreyate.org.uk
