THE POLICE and Crime Commissioner (PCC) for Gloucestershire, Martin Surl, is expected to formally give his support to new security cameras to Wotton-under-Edge when he visits the town next week.

The announcement will be in response to a bid from the Town Council for funding for new CCTV cameras and follows a £10,000 grant from the Commissioner’s Fund towards the Wotton Community Sports Foundation’s (WCSF) skate park scheme.

“Ideas that come from local people who are also meeting most of the costs themselves are much more likely to work," said Mr Surl.

"It’s why the community and voluntary sector is making such an important contribution to my police and crime plan towards reducing crime and anti-social behaviour."

Mayor of Wotton-Under-Edge, Cllr Roger Claydon OBE, said: “We are delighted to be awarded this grant from the PCC which will enable the town's CCTV system to be upgraded and extended.

“Wotton was one of the first of Gloucestershire's market towns to introduce its own CCTV system and its presence has had a positive impact on keeping the town a safe place for residents, businesses and visitors. “This grant, along with continued support from the Town Council, will help maintain the future effectiveness of the system."

The Commissioner will also use his mobile office to discuss local issues with residents, business and council representatives on Monday, July 28.

“Being able to take my office on the road is a great way of meeting the public and I am determined to get around the county as much as I can and make this a regular feature of my time in office”, said Mr Surl.

“I hope as many people as possible will take the opportunity to come and talk to me.”

The commissioner’s mobile office will be in Wotton-under-Edge on Monday July 28th, parked at the Civic Centre Car Park near the council entrance doors adjoining the Bear St wall from around 1.30pm.

The office is a second hand mobile display vehicle which was bought last year to enable him to have public surgeries and attend local events in keeping with his promise to be open, transparent and an effective voice for the public.
