ENERGETIC villagers joined in the annual Wickwar Games by running, cycling and playing cricket.

They also took part in a tug of war challenge and various track and field events on the village playing fields, despite getting a soaking in the rain.

The games have a long history, with the first event held in the 1940s. But there was a break of about seven years before being revived in 2011 and regaining their popularity.

As well as family sports for all ages, the organisers also planned a five-mile cycle time trial, fun run and a cricket challenge.

Jennifer Broad, of the Wickwar Playing Fields Association, said this year's event had been jointly run by a group of local organisations, including the Wickwar Playing Fields Association, the village school parent teacher association, the Friends of Wickwar Church and the local running group the Wickwar Wunners.

Winners from all the races will now be entered into ledgers which have been kept from all the past games.
