A SIGN pointing people to Cam and Dursley's railway station has been directing people the wrong way for several months - but few seem to have even noticed.

Daring pranksters were able to rotate the sign pointing towards the station 180 degrees at the t-junction of Dursley Road, next to the Yew Tree pub.

So instead of being correctly pointed down The Quarry and on towards the station, travellers, tourists and commuters were being directed either to Stinchcombe or the Fourboys Garden Centre.

Eagle-eyed Elena Dunn, from Boulton Lane in Dursley, noticed the issue on Thursday, March 13 when heading to a nearby toddler group but did not report it out of curiosity to see when it would be put right.

The 39-year-old nanny had a long wait as she did not see it in its correct position until early July.

“The citizens of Dursley have long been annoyed by the fact that the train station is too far away, in fact in the wilderness outside the neighbouring village of Cam, but some pranksters decided to do something about it,” she said.

“I wander why did it take so long and did anybody else notice it?" she said.

A spokesperson for Gloucestershire County Council, said they had not received any complaints from residents or visitors to the area.

“We can only assume that a mystery passerby helpfully changed the sign back,” she said.

“It’s good to know that someone in the local community is looking out for Cam and Dursley train users.”

Cam Parish Council clerk Sue Hanman said she had a vague recollection of reporting it to Gloucestershire County some months ago but could not find a record of it.

“Highway signs do get turned round occasionally, especially those near pubs, and we wouldn’t have seen it as a major issue,” she said.
