MORE than 18,000 people enjoyed the first ever South Gloucestershire Show at the weekend.

The two-day event, on August 2 and 3, saw local dance troupes and singing groups perform alongside professional bands and stunt acts across three fields which also incorporated a fishing competition, classic car display and Extreme Wheels stunt display.

There was a live music stage, shopping areas, shooting, cycling and golf zones as well as exhibition arenas and a health and wellbeing centre.

Show organiser Darren Hawkins said Saturday’s weather had hampered ticket sales but the sunshine on Sunday saw families flock to the show at Henfield Fishery on Westerleigh Road.

“We had people come from literally all across the county which is exactly what we wanted,” he said. “Our exhibitors were happy and so were the crowds and across the weekend we had 18,000 paying customers.”

He said highlights included the Flyin (CORR) Ryan motorcycle stunt show, the classic car display featuring several Aston Martin DBs and a 1950s Cadillac and a farrier display.

“We also held a commemorative service, led by Yate rector Rev Ian Wallace, for the centenary of the start of World War One on Sunday which was very well received,” said Mr Hawkins.

“We had over 1,000 people come by bike and cycling charity Sustrans said they had more people sign up with them at the show than they did in Nottingham when the Tour de France was there.”

He added: “Overall we are really pleased and are hoping it will be an easier sale for next year’s event, which will again take place on the first weekend in August.

“We couldn’t have done it without our sponsors, for whom this was a leap of faith, and our volunteers who worked tirelessly over the weekend, and we would like to say a big thank you to them.”
