SUNNY weather has ensured that scores of people turned out for this year’s Slimbridge Gardening Club Summer Flower, Fruit and Vegetable show.

Hundreds of different types of plant life were shown off by entrants from across the area, hoping to please this year's judges, with 16 trophies up for grabs.

Phil Sealey swept the board with the most points entering all categories except the floral arrangements, with Pat Clutterbuck winning the cookery cup.

Harry Evans had the most points in the vegetable section and the silver salver for the best exhibit in the flower section with his Dahlias.

The most points for Dahlias was won by George Tarr, while Michael Clift proved he knew his onions as they were considered the best exhibit in the vegetable section.

The cups for the most points in the children's sections were won by Phoebe Mack for the girls and Samuel Hall for the boys.

The ladies working in the tea room were kept busy all afternoon on Saturday, August 16 supplying homemade cakes and scones.

An auction was held of everything that did not want to be taken back by its owners and, led by Slimbridge resident George Baker, or Geranium George, it raised £63.

Together with bucket donations and selling cards, he raised £129.89 which would go towards chosen charity, the Cobalt Unit.

The garden club is believed to have raised enough to meet the costs of the event and chairwoman Carole Jeffes thanked everyone for all their hard work to make the show a success.

Show manager Norma Griffiths said the show saw an increased turnout thanks to the good weather.

“I think people enjoyed themselves, they seemed to linger in the refreshment area as well and stayed for the presentation,” she said.

“People came from quite a distance.”

The show started in 1942 as part of a “dig for victory” campaign during the war and ever since has proved a family favourite for the village’s residents.
