BRIMSHAM Green School in Yate bucked the national dip in GCSE results with a large increase in the number of students achieving five or more A* to C grades.

The school saw 56 per cent of students gain the highest marks in five or more subjects, compared to only 48 per cent in 2013, as well as a five per cent rise in students’ expected levels of progress in English and maths.

It meant the school is one of South Gloucestershire's most improved for results this year.

Head teacher Kim Garland said: “Students and staff alike have worked incredibly hard to earn these pleasing results. They are a significant improvement on previous years and we are really delighted that grades in English and Mathematics have increased significantly.

“As a consequence, students are well-equipped to continue their education at our Sixth Form, or pursue apprenticeships. Of course students’ success has been nurtured by the involvement of our parents, and the input of all of our support staff – it is a real ‘team effort’.”

Students performed well in a wide variety of subjects including English literature, music, religious studies and the three sciences, all of which had an A*- C pass rate of at least 80 per cent. In BTEC subjects, 100 per cent of pupils achieved at least a grade C equivalent, with 40 per cent of students gaining an A* or A equivalent grade in sport and dance.

Top performers were Gemma Hutchinson, who scored seven A*s and five As, Amber Castle with five A*s and six As and Matthew Milton who gained three A*s and nine As.

Students can now register for Brimsham’s joint sixth form with Chipping Sodbury School. An open evening for Year 7 admissions in September 2015 takes place on Thursday, October 2 (6pm). More details are available at www.brimsham.com
