THE CHOIR of Dursley Parish Church, currently on holiday for the month of August, is seeking sopranos for the beginning of their Autumn term.

The current choir has an unbroken record of existence from 1862 when the new chancel was built and for the first time a robed choir sat at the front of the church to lead the singing, continuing on to this day.

The choir is also building up the junior section and applications are invited from interested youngsters aged eight years and over, and even get paid for their efforts.

As well as leading the services at St James’ Church and St Mark’s Church in the town, the choir frequently deputises for almost every cathedral within 100 miles.

It also enjoy an active social life, with an annual dinner, skittles matches and plant and produce sales.

Over the Christmas period the choir also sings at Westonbirt Aboretum, Dyrham Park and local car homes.

Choir spokesman David wood said that while the choir welcomes applicants to all sections of the choir, sopranos were being particularly sought after.

“The Autumn term is especially exciting, starting with the harvest festival celebrations followed by the advent and Christmas services.

Music director Nigel Davies told the Gazette: “Of course membership of the choir is a considerable commitment but ask any of the current 36 member and they will say it is well worth it.”
