A GOLF club is to host a charity competition and an evening of entertainment – all in the hope of raising awareness and funds for prostate cancer.

Canons Court Golf Club, in Wotton-under-Edge, is holding an open golf competition for teams of four on Saturday, September 20.

Including a disco and raffle in the evening, all the money raised at the event will go straight to a prostate cancer charity.

Anita Dudley, of Charfield, near Wotton-under-Edge, is function manager at the golf club.

She said: “We’re expecting a very good turn-out. We have a lot of members here and they’re all getting in touch with their friends and telling them to come down. We’ve also done a lot of advertising.

“At the end of the day we just want to make people aware of prostate cancer, and know what’s what with testing.

“Often, prostate cancer is found too late, and the majority of our members are male, so we just want to encourage men to go out and get tested.”

Entry for a team is £60, which includes a sandwich and chip buffet as well as entrance to the evening function. The disco is £5 for those that didn’t play in the contest.

Ms Dudley is hoping to accumulate a range of quality prizes for the raffle from local stores and businesses.

Trophies will be awarded, including four for all players on the winning team. One unlucky player will be awarded with a wooden spoon.

The tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 10am.
