A MAN whose wife died of pancreatic cancer will complete a charity walk in Northern Spain to raise funds to help fight the disease.

Chris Farquharson, of Elm Lodge, Cam, will walk the 312 miles of the Camino de Santiago routewhich he has not previously walked.

Mr Farquharson’s late wife Gill Farquharson died of pancreatic cancer in 2013, and he has hopes of raising money and awareness for the charity Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund.

Choosing a country that he and his wife both enjoyed, Mr Farquharson will walk from Burgos to Santiago de Compostela, starting on October 7.

Staying in several cheap hotels along the way, he expects the journey to take him about four weeks.

Mr Farquharson has already raised £1,000 and expects to have at least £1,500 before setting off next month.

Dyson also donated one of their Ball vacuum cleaners which he intends to raffle off to raise more money for the charity.

Mr Farquharson said that he hopes his efforts will go some way towards raising awareness of what he sees as a frequently overlooked cause,

He said: “I really hope it will make people more aware. Once you’ve been affected by it in your own family the number of people who say ‘my brother had pancreatic cancer’ or ‘my friend did’ is really surprising.”

He continued to say that, due to the personal emotional significance of the challenge, he will complete the walk alone.

“I’m doing it completely alone because it’s something that is between me and my wife really.

“It will be very emotional and also very spiritual.”

Only three per cent of people suffering pancreatic cancer survive for five years and the majority die within six months. There has been no improvement to these statistics in the past 30 years.
