A PRIMARY school has leapt from "satisfactory" to "good" in its most recent Ofsted report.

Sharpness Primary School was inspected by Ofsted in July this year. The report, which was published on Tuesday, September 9, awarded them "good" in all categories.

Head teacher Jill Brookes called the result a team effort with special credit to pupils, whose attitude and behaviour she described as “brilliant.”

The inspection took place over the course of July 8 and 9 this year, two weeks before the end of the school’s summer term.

The inspector observed six different lessons, as well as playtime and lunchtime, and spoke to staff, students and parents and carers over the course of the two days.

Achievement in maths and reading across key stage one and two was given a result of "good".

The report commends the school for its “good quality teaching” and the behaviour of the pupils. It says that students are “eager to learn and to help each other.”

The report adds that students are kept safe and well cared for within the school and that staff are particularly good at providing support for vulnerable children to ensure they make good progress.

Head of Sharpness Primary School Mrs Brookes was thrilled with the Ofsted results.

She said: “The Inspector was impressed with their learning and their behaviour and attitude, particularly how they look out for each other.

“This has been a true team effort, but I am especially delighted for our pupils. Their attitude and behaviour is brilliant. Every visitor to the school comments on the fantastic welcome the children give.

“Our parents also support us well, of which we are very grateful. They deserve this recognition from Ofsted, and this is just the tonic we need to take this school forward into the realms of outstanding.”

Ofsted also noted a few areas in which the school could improve to achieve an Outstanding report. One shortfall was a lack of students progressing quickly enough with their writing.

Other areas in which the school had room for improvement included teachers not expecting enough of their pupils’ written work and leaders and teachers not being asked to account for their pupils’ progress in writing enough.

An open morning at the school for members of the community, especially prospective parents, will be held on Thursday, October 2, between 9.30 and 11.30am.

Visitors will have the chance to wander theough the school and meet staff, students and representatives from the governing body.

The playgroup on the same site will also be open on the day to show their new building.

Sharpness Primary School is a smaller than average school with a total of 101 pupils in attendance.
