MORE THAN 7,000 children in South Gloucestershire took part in this year’s Summer Reading Challenge.

Amongst them were children from Manorbrook School who enthusiastically took part in Thornbury Lirary’s Mythical Maze Summer Reading challenge.

Throughout the school holidays they regularly visited the library, reading and borrowing books in order to collect stickers, a certificate and a medal as they completed the challenge.

Manorbrook Headteacher, Mrs Angela Evans, said: “I am very proud of the children and their families for their hard work over the holiday and delighted to be presenting so many certificates in assembly. The children know how important it is to be a good reader’”

A group of children, representing the 7,000 who took part, were presented their awards by South Gloucestershire Council chairman, Cllr Howard Gawler at Staple Hill Library.

He said: “It’s wonderful to see so many children in South Gloucestershire this enthusiastic about reading.

Children’s reading ability can often dip during the long summer holidays, but the Summer Reading Challenge helps ensure that they return to school confident and motivated readers.

All of the children who have completed the challenge should be congratulated for their fantastic efforts.”
