ONE HUNDRED and fifty new homes could be built in Thornbury as a housing developer looks to build more houses in Thornbury.

Linden Homes have notified Thornbury Town Council that it is their intention to build the homes on land at Post Farm, on the northern edge of the town.

The 8.6 hectare area of land that the firm have ear-marked for the development, off Butt Lane, is outside of the identified development boundary for the town.

A document has been sent to South Gloucestershire Council and Thornbury Town Council outlining the firm’s plans.

The proposals were first discussed at a meeting of the Severn Vale Area Forum when the proposals were brought up by a member of public.

The land is controlled by Linden Homes who have carried out numerous surveys on the site to check its suitability for home building.

In recent years two major housing developments have been granted permission in Thornbury – Bloor Homes are building about 300 homes after being given the go-ahead by government inspectors and a 500 home site at Park Farm was given the green light in 2012.

Members of the public brought up concerns with councillors at the Town Council’s Town Development Committee that allowing previous sites to be developed had set the ball rolling for other developers to do the same in the town.

Cllr Maggie Tyrrell said: “Although the Town Council agreed with the development at Park Farm it was because we wanted some sort of control over where they’d be.

“South Gloucestershire Council has very recently set out its Core Strategy for the next 26 years, but whether or not a government planning inspector will come in over everyone’s heads and give remains to be seen.”

A spokesman for Linden Homes said that the reason the site had been identified by the firm was to meet the need for new homes to be built and that they had identified the site as a suitable one.

“We have considered that the council (South Gloucestershire) will need to find places for new homes to be built.

“We are currently engaging with South Gloucestershire Council as part of the pre-planning stage and will be holding an event in Thornbury to take in the views of the public.

He added that a meeting will be held by the developers on Wednesday, October 15 at Turnberries to discuss the proposals and that a newsletter leaflet will also be circulated to residents who live near to the proposed site.
