VOLUNTEERS are needed to keep a popular country lane clean and tidy now that cars and other vehicles have been banned.

Frampton End Road was closed to through traffic earlier this year, making it safer for walkers, cyclists and horse riders.

A long running campaign had been successful in persuading council leaders to get rid of vehicles from the narrow and bending lane, which runs between Frampton Cotterell, Iron Acton and Mayshill.

Those behind the campaign had said the speed of cars using the road had made it dangerous for other users.

Now children can be seen learning to ride their bikes, while walkers enjoying the Frome Valley Walkway can enjoy circular routes that take in the lane.

Cyclist and Coalpit Heath resident, Alan Bracey, said members of the South Gloucestershire Council Streetcare team had recently been out cutting back hedges along the lane and he wanted to form a group of local volunteers to continue the good work.

He said: "I look forward to being part of a regular team to keep it clean. Believe me, this road is now a real pleasure to ride”.

Local councillors Dav e and Pat Hockey said they were delighted that so many people were able to enjoy using the lane and urged people to join Mr Bracey's team.
