A CAR that overturned on a Wotton-under-Edge road has left a resident outraged that her campaign to reduce the speed limit has been ineffective.

The incident took place on Thursday, December 4, when a car swerved at the Renishaw roundabout, overturning the vehicle and leaving the 20-year-old driver with minor injuries.

Nearby Charfield resident Veronica Bruce, 67, led a petition in June last year to reduce the speed limit on the B4058 Wotton Road, between Wotton and Charfield.

Miss Bruce, who owns Wotton Animal Rescue, campaigned and gathered 500 signatures to reduce the speed limit on the road from its current 50mph limit to 30mph.

On Friday, December 5, she photographed the car cordoned off with police tape near the roundabout and is angry that the speed limit has still not been reduced.

She said: “Someone phoned me to tell me another accident had happened when they saw the car near the roundabout. I was told the car had rolled over so we went out on Friday at around 4pm to see.

“It looked petty, but still bad and there was damage all over the car. It looked like it had not made the roundabout and then rolled right over, and seeing it brought back memories of all the other accidents.

“I was concerned when I heard about it and when I saw it, and I know it could have been something more tragic.”

A Gloucestershire police spokesman said: “We were called at 11.20pm on Thursday, December 4, to a report of a silver Vauxhall Corsa registered to Gloucester that had overturned at the Renishaw Roundabout.

“It was minor injuries only to a 20-year-old man who was driving. The man had swerved to avoid an animal.”

Miss Bruce said: “The accidents that have happened have been horrendous. I have lived here for 45 years and there have been so many accidents, and it makes me wonder how many more will have to happen before changes are made.

“After my petition there have been five more accidents and one death. Do we need another death to happen? I am terrified there will be another bad accident. It’s unbelievable that nothing has been done. I’ve been told by the council that they can’t afford for the speed limit to be reduced which is outrageous.”

Last year 18-year-old Rory Evans died after a road traffic collision on Wotton Road on Friday, December 27.

Miss Bruce added: “From the Charfield boundary up to the roundabout we have just three houses with no streetlights and no pavements. When people leave my property, I feel like I have to tell them not to turn right because it is so unsafe.”

Peter Wilcox, 67, who helps at the animal sanctuary, said: “There’s just not enough room for vehicles, especially the bigger lorries that come down here, to get past.

“The B road is only about 18ft wide. The verge has completely gone and there are loads of lorries heading down towards the motorway going at a fast speed.”

Kingswood Parish Council clerk, Mary Leonard, said: “We are applying for a change in the speed limit on this road from 50mph to 40mph. The process could be as much as £10,000 and take two years.”

A road safety  spokesman at Gloucestershire County Council said: “This particular incident was not as a result of speeding, however, we will consider residents concerns.”
