PUPILS at Marlwood School in Alveston have been putting remote controlled cars to the test.

The youngsters teamed up with students from the University of the West of England (UWE) to create the cars from kits by using their skills in science, technology and engineering.

They also designed the paintwork and stencils used to add the finishing touches.

During a five-day session, the four UWE students who are training to be teachers guided pupils from years seven to 11 in the construction of the vehicles.

Each car took up to three days to complete, with the project also including the design and construction of jumps, ramps and other obstacles for an eventual race day.

Assistant headteacher at the school Jon Gallop was thrilled to see Marlwood pupils getting involved throughout the day.

He said: "We have been delighted with the levels of engagement and enthusiasm exhibited by all students.

"Many thanks to the PGCE students from the University West of England for working collaboratively and effectively with the school."

More than 45 pupils were involved in the scheme, with six cars made and four of them representing the four school houses of Berkeley, Witton, Holt and Kingsley raced in a series of competitions.
