YATE councillors, teachers and students gathered to launch a heritage project involving maps being installed around the town.

Students from Brimsham Green School have worked alongside the Yate Heritage Centre to highlight the town's rich heritage by installing creative maps around the town.

The historical project was launched at Brimsham Park on Monday, January 26 with Mayor of Yate, Cllr Wully Perks, Cllr Tony Davis and Cllr Mike Drew, Brimsham Green teachers and students coming together at the park.

Brimsham Green students worked alongside the town’s heritage centre to launch the historical project and locate maps at various venues including the railway station, Cranleigh Court Road, Brimsham Park and Kingsgate Park.

The students provided research and background to the history of the maps as well as the design.
Community heritage officer, David Hardill, said: "The launch went very well. The maps highlight the rich heritage of Yate.

"This has been a rewarding project and will inform the local areas of Yate of their heritage. The maps are divided into North, West, South and General to give local people a clearer idea of their immediate heritage."

Compass Graphics have provided the hardware design and the Friends of Yate Railway Station have provided support while Yate Town Council has funded four of the maps and the Yate Community Plan the fifth.

Additional maps will also soon be installed through the project at the Railway station and Cranleigh Court Road.
