LIBRARY-GOERS across South Gloucestershire will be treated to a range of fun activities over the weekend with the arrival of National Library Day.

A variety of events and activities have been organised to take place for National Library Day, on Saturday, February 7.

The celebrations of the national day include author visits, craft sessions, and storytime and rhymetime sessions for young children.

Additionally, all library members who visit their local library on the day can reserve up to two items from the LibrariesWest catalogue free of charge, hire a DVD for half price and anyone who borrows at least three physical items will be entered into a free prize draw with the chance to win a tablet computer, a £25 voucher for a well-known online retailer and a range of bestselling books.

The free prize draw is also open to anyone who joins the library online on the day.

South Gloucestershire Council is also  launching a Facebook eAudio reading group on National Libraries Day for people who find it difficult to attend a reading group but would still like to read the same book as others and share their thoughts afterwards.

BBC Radio Bristol will be joining the celebrations again by touring the five LibrariesWest authorities with the Afternoon Show with Claire Cavanagh in the week leading up to National Libraries Day.

Radio Bristol will be visiting Thornbury Library on Tuesday, February 3 between 2pm and 4pm and the show will feature interviews with authors Susan Lewis and Paula Bowles.

Other activities taking place on the day include Get singing Thornbury, at Thornbury Library where the community choir will perform between 10am and 11.30am.

Patchway Library will offer adults the opportunity to have a go at book folding between 10am and 11.30am. Places are free but need to be booked via the library on 01454 868006 or by emailing patchway.library@southglos.gov.uk.

Storytime with Elmer the patchwork elephant will take place for young children at Chipping Sodbury Library at 10am, and at Yate Library at 11.30am (and again at 11.30am on Sunday, February 8).

A talk, Children in the Bristol Blitx, by author and historian Penny Starns will be given at Filton Library at 2.30pm. Get your free ticket from www.southglosevents.evenbrite.co.uk.

Many libraries will also be running a treasure hunt for children and a fun literary quiz for adults.
