A THORNBURY dad will be running the London Marathon after being inspired by his seven-year-old son who has diabetes.

Chris Huke, 40, will take on the challenge of the Virgin Money London Marathon in April to raise vital funds for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).

He is hoping to raise £2,000 to help the charity continue their pioneering research to cure, treat and prevent type 1 diabetes.

Chris’ son, Alfie was diagnosed with diabetes shortly before his 3rd birthday. The illness means that his pancreas no longer works and he is dependent on daily insulin management to help his body function. The chronic condition is not linked to lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise. It is estimated that, to date, Alfie has undergone 12,000 finger blood tests and had around 5,000 insulin injections.

Chris said: “I turned 40 in December and set myself the challenge of completing the marathon. I've chosen to run for JDRF as they've been a great support to the whole family since Alfie's diagnosis.

“They gave Alfie, Rufus the bear, his own diabetic friend, to help him come to terms with his diagnosis. They've also organised discovery days to help us learn more about the condition and meet other families in the same position which has been really helpful.

“I'm confident that through research, a cure for type 1 diabetes will be found. This will allow Alfie and others like him to say goodbye to the daily routine of finger blood tests and insulin injections or infusions, forever.'

As well as putting in the hours training for 26.2 mile race, Chris has been busy fundraising in the lead up to the big event.

On Friday, March 6 at 6pm Chris and his family are hosting a family disco and raffle at Thornbury Rugby Club. Prizes include a signed Bristol City first team shirt and family tickets to a variety of attractions.
