TWO drinking establishments in Dursley suddenly ceased to operate last week – leaving the public wondering why.
The Old Bell and Capones nightclub, both in Long Street, Dursley, were closed throughout the weekend.
The Gazette understands that customers and staff were removed from The Bell on Wednesday evening, though by who is as of yet unknown.
Both of the businesses are co-owned by Stavros Antonio.
Facebook was ablaze with confusion and sadness at the loss of two of Dursley’s most popular establishments.
Paula Mellerup, speaking on Facebook in the group Dursley Matters, said: "Will be a shame to see The Old Bell gone. It's such a lovely family that run it and has great character and characters in there.
"But I think Stav has something up his sleeve."
Ms Mellerup may be correct as some of the more recent comments suggest a reopening in two or three weeks.
Mr Antonio did not provide a comment so all theories on what happened are currently unconfirmed.
In 2014, as a result of grievances from nearby residents about noise, fighting and other anti-social problems, Dursley Town Council called for another look at Capone’s licence to open until 5am.
