A DRUNK driver from Cam careered out of control into horse boxes and other vehicles at a county show – leaving one man injured.

Graham Hill, of Cam Green, was three times over the drink drive limit when the collisions happened on May 23 last year at the weather hit Westpoint showground near Exeter, in Devon.

Hill, denied a charge of drink driving and went on trial at Exeter Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, March 18.

He said his Vauxhall van suffered a mechanical malfunction and began to accelerate. He collided with a number of vehicles which were parked and unattended in a parking area which included some horse boxes.

One man was slightly injured in the collisions and Hill himself was taken to hospital for treatment.

The court heard his light van came to a halt but he was unable to get any traction because of the wet grass and mud.

He told police that he was trying to move to a different area and the vehicle "careered out of control hitting stationary vehicles".

He told officers he had drunk two cans of cider at lunch shortly before the crash which caused substantial damage to the vehicles.

Hill was breath tested at the showground and blew 115 mg of alcohol in his breath. The legal limit is 35.

In hospital several hours later he had a blood test and the reading was 227mg of alcohol in the blood – the top limit for driving is 80.

The prosecution said much of the evidence was agreed and Hill accepts he was driving.

The issue in dispute was whether the driving took place in a public area.

Exeter magistrates convicted him of drink driving and he was banned for 24 months and fined a total of £620.
