A NOTICE to quit the historic Coombe village allotments site in Wotton-under-Edge has left allotment owners bemused.
The notice, from Loxley Solicitors, on behalf of landlord Susan Jane Ballinger, appeared on the site and was posted through doors at about 6am on Saturday, March 21.
The move has prompted a large community response in a short space of time, with Twitter user @FightforCoombe already having accumulated 295 followers.
No consultation was made and allotment users are yet to understand the reasoning behind the action.
According to the solicitor's letter they will have to "deliver up" possession of their allotments by March 25, 2016.
The allotments are thought to have been in Wotton-under-Edge before 1847, with some suggesting they are among the oldest in Britain.
Loxley Solicitors were unable to provide a comment prior to publication.
