EASTER was celebrated early at a Yate school were pupils and staff held a special parade donning handmade Easter hats.

Children at Broadway Infant School, Broadway, took part in the school’s annual Easter hat parade, where all 179 pupils at the school joined in with members of staff making Easter themed hats before parading around the school and singing in the school hall on Friday, March 27.

Headteacher Sue Tanner said: “Every year the families join in with this fun event. It all makes a wonderful start to the Easter holidays.

"This year it was particularly special because we began by singing to teacher Miss Brooke and her fiancé Sam Grundy as they are getting married in the Easter holidays. We pretended that all the children were wedding guests in their best hats and we dressed her up in a tiara and a veil.

"Sam arrived as a surprise and we presented them both with presents from the staff and flowers from all the parents and carers. It was a lovely start to this special day.

"This year the Easter hat competition was judged by our chair of governors Alan Lawrance. The children can wear their hats in school and out in the sunshine at playtimes which they really enjoy.

They also wear their hats at the end of the day and the Friends of Broadway arrange for an Easter egg hunt which the children enjoy. This year they also had a cake stall, tattoos, spot the difference, Easter card decorating, with tea and cake on offer as refreshments for everyone.

"It is a really lovely day, one of my favourites."
