SODBURY Town Council officially opened their new council offices during a celebratory event in the town.

An opening event saw the chairman of South Gloucestershire Council Councillor Howard Gawler join the chairs from local councils, and volunteers from communities and organisations in the town gather in the new offices on Friday, March 27 to celebrate the council's offices.

The event, at The Old Reading Rooms at 26 High Street, officially opened the offices which were refurbished by its previous owners, changed from business to residential property and then purchased by the town council who took over the offices officially in December last year.

Mayor Wendy Whittle said: "As mayor and chairman of the council I am honoured and proud to have been involved in the purchase of this historic building.

"It is a Grade 2 Building steeped in history dating back to the 1400’s. It was once a Literary Institute and Reading Rooms and was part of the 19th century movement to encourage literacy in the working classes.

"Due to the history of this, Sodbury Town Council decided to re-name No 26 High Street back to The Old Reading Rooms tying in all the history of the building."
