DISABLED people across South Gloucestershire are dismayed that the government plans to scrap the Independent Living Fund (ILF), and rightly so.

For so many of them will echo the sentiments of Caroline Lines, who is fighting to save the scheme.

“If the ILF is cut off, it will take away my independence,” she told the Gazette – and that is exactly what the programme means to countless disabled people: independence.

It has allowed them to live in their own home and be a part of their community, instead of being shut away in a care home or a burden on relatives or friends.

Surely the fact that so many people are desperately calling for the ILF to remain will sway the government to make a U-turn and reverse their decision.

Alas, it seems the powers that be are not listening to the public on the matter.
