A SEVEN-YEAR-OLD girl from Cam has made the decision to lose the majority of her long hair so that it can be made into wigs for children undergoing cancer treatment.

Mia Sargent heard about The Little Princess Trust – a national charity that makes wigs from real hair for young cancer patients – when the secondary school her dad works at in Gloucester held a fundraiser for the organisation.

Her parents made her wait six months to ensure it was something she really wanted to do – and now, with that time passed, Mia is still eager to do what she can for the cause.

Mia’s mum Sharon Sargent is full of pride over her daughter’s decision.

“Her dad was doing raising funds for the charity at his school so we talked about it and how there are children who lose their hair,” she said.

“Straight away it was something she was desperate to do. She is so excited about it, and the fundraising.

“We made her wait all this time but she’s still really keen to do it. I’m so proud of her because it’s such a nice thing to do.”

Mia will have her hair cut at an event at her school, Cam Woodfield, on Tuesday, May 19, but her efforts don’t stop there.

Sharon continued: “It costs around £350 for the charity to make each wig and while they receive a lot of donations of hair they don’t always get the money to go with it.

“When we realised this we thought raising the £350 was something we would also aim to do.”

A raffle will be held at the school on the day of the event with a number of prizes up for grabs – including the vital hairdresser’s role.

The basic fundraising target was £350, but having already reached £310 Mia and her family are hoping to soar past their original goal.
