POLICE in Gloucestershire have issued a warning over distraction thefts throughout the county.

An increasing number of thefts reported across the country have triggered an appeal by Gloucestershire Police to ensure people are aware of the dangers of distraction.

Shoppers are often stopped and asked for directions by people with maps while valuables are stolen from their cars or bag. In most of the cases the offenders watched the victim key in their pin at a cash point before stealing from them.

A shocking 24 offences of distraction theft have been reported to Gloucestershire Police since the beginning of 2015.

All supermarket chains have been affected by the type of crime and they have occurred in all districts with the exception of the Forest of Dean.

Fifteen of the incidents have happened in supermarket car parks when offenders ask for directions to the hospital or the train station.

Twenty one of the victims have been female, three have been male and all are aged over 60, yet the majority have been in their 70s and 80s.

Forty incidences of pick pocketing or purse dipping have also been reported at supermarkets since the start of the year.

Police advise members of the public to be vigilant, keep valuables secure and report stolen cards immediately.

Crime reduction advisor Dave McFarlane said: “We are very conscious of these types of crime and we are in the process of talking to all supermarkets in the county to ask them to assist us in the prevention of these thefts.

“If staff and customers can be mindful about this type of crime we can make it harder for the offenders.

“Be cautious at all times when approached by a seemingly kind stranger attempting to distract you from your property or possessions - always be aware of your surroundings and don’t let your guard down in public places.

“If you feel vulnerable simply say you can’t help.”
