THE police are warning householders to be vigilant following a suspected scam in Tewkesbury.

On July 15 just after midday a man knocked on the door of a house in Steward Road, Northway, saying he was from Severn Trent water authority.

He was wearing a false ID card on a lanyard around his neck and carrying a payment card machine.

He said the householder owed money to Severn Trent water for unpaid water bills and a reconnection fee and that the householder could pay by cash or by debit card.

The householder knew the caller was bogus because he pays his water bill by direct debit and he chased the man from his property.

The man is described as between 35 and 40-years-old with short dark hair and tanned skin.

He's about 5'6" tall and of medium-stocky/athletic build and was wearing a short sleeved shirt, black trousers and shiny shoes.

The offender made off in a black Audi A6 with a female driving.

The police would like to advise all householders to be on their guard when answering the door to unexpected strangers and to never give cash, card details or payments to anyone even if they appear to have an official ID.

Anyone who recognises the description above or who has further information should call 101 quoting incident number 182 of 16th July 2015.
