GOVERNMENT cost-cutting measures have threatened the future of North Avon Magistrates’ Court in Yate.

The court in Kennedy Way is on a list of 70 around the country which have been earmarked for closure, with a consultation taking place until October 8.

If North Avon is closed, cases that would have been dealt with there will be heard at Bristol Magistrates’ Court, 11 miles away.

HM Courts & Tribunals Service, which manages the court, told the Gazette there is no definite plan for the 13 members of staff currently working in Yate.

A spokesman said: “This is a consultation exercise and no decisions have been made. We will support our staff through any changes.”

The staff cover five courtrooms, 12 custody cells and eight waiting rooms.

Government data shows that the magistrates’ court in Yate was only used for 28 per cent of its available capacity last year.

The MP for Thornbury and Yate, Luke Hall, said: “While the government must find sensible savings, I know some of my constituents will be concerned about these proposals.

“I will be speaking to local people and encourage residents to respond to the consultation.

“I met with the minister responsible on Monday, courts and tribunals minister Shailesh Vara, to make my feelings known and have also written to him seeking further information.

“I am visiting the court to speak to staff today [Thursday] and I will do what I can to ensure that local jobs are protected and to make sure that local people get the best possible service.”
