AN ELECTRICIAN from Cam who was diagnosed and beat cancer just this year took part in a marathon golf match to support charities that help people living with cancer.

Along with seven friends, Matt Harris, raised about £2,500 after playing four rounds of golf in one day.

The 32-year-old said that the fundraising event at Stinchcombe Golf Course was to help support people who are experiencing what he has.

Diagnosed in January of this year, Matt went through three months of intense treatment including chemotherapy before being given the all clear.

“They were the toughest three months of my life,” he said. “There were some very low moments but I had fantastic support.”

His treatment was finished in March and in May on a visit to his doctor it was confirmed that it had worked and that the cancer was gone.

He added: “Once I’d visited the doctor and been given the good news it was all about getting back to full fitness. Of course I’d had five months off work as well whilst I was being treated so I had to get back into that too.

“I was on Facebook and saw something about a 72-hour golf challenge for charity and realised it would be good to give something back.

“The eight of us got together and wanted to give something back to the next person who has to go through what I did.”

Teeing off at 5.15am they played throughout the day before finishing the final round at gone 7pm.

Matt thanked the golf course for supporting the fundraising effort .

“Stinchcombe Golf Course were really supportive and let us play four rounds of golf in one day to raise money,” he said.

“I also need to thank at least 30 friends who supported me through this year and who have also helped me raise so much money.”

The group have, so far, raised about £2,500 for Macmillan Cancer Support. To donate visit: https://www.justgiving.com/m-harris2.
