EMOTIONS ran high at Castle School Sixth Form in Thornbury today as students found out their AS and A-level results.

The sixth form site, in Gloucester Road, was filled with nerves and excitement as students opened their results this morning which for many, confirmed their next stage of education or employment.

Ewan McLacklan, 18, was thrilled with his A-level results, achieving an A* in physics and two As in maths and chemistry.

“I’m over the moon,” he said.

“Now I am off to Nottingham University to study mechanical engineering, I can’t wait. A few of us are going out tonight to celebrate.”

18-year-old George Williams was also pleased with his A-level results, obtaining an A in biology, B in maths and a C in psychology, with plans to study human anatomy at Liverpool University.

He said: “I'm really happy. It hasn’t really sunk in yet that I am actually going to university."

Kate Brown, 19, retook her A-levels and was pleased with her results which have meant she will be going to Bristol University to study law in September.

She said: “I got an A* in sociology, A in English literature and an A in geography which is better than I expected to do.

“We’ve all been up all night texting each other about results day because we couldn’t sleep – I had an adrenalin rush.”

Head of sixth form, Louise Davies, said: “The staff have been really excited about finding out everyone’s grades too – there’s been lots of emotion of both sides.”

13 students achieved 3 A grades (or vocational qualification equivalent) or better, securing places at the country’s top universities.

Headteacher Peter Smart said the results have maintained the school’s strong tradition for achievement and academic success.

“These results will enable our students to have the very best possible start within higher education and the workplace,” he said.

“Of the just over 450 A-level entries 99 percent gained a pass, demonstrating the school’s commitment to achievement for everyone.

“ A number of students also have apprenticeships in the local area lined up.

“Top performing student Stephen Lambert achieved 3 A* grades and an A grade and is heading to Cambridge University in the autumn to read French and Spanish.

“I congratulate them all, and wish them every success for the future. 82 percent of results achieved were graded A*-C, a further improvement on last year’s excellent results.”
