BRIMSHAM Green School in Yate is celebrating its best ever set of GCSE results.

The school saw 61 per cent of students gain at least five GCSEs graded A* to C including in the two core subjects of English and maths.

In English, 75 per cent were awarded A* to C and in maths, 78 per cent attained C or above. In addition, students have improved in English and maths with 87 per cent and 76 per cent respectively making the expected progress.

Head teacher Kim Garland said: “These are the best results in the school’s history and reflect our students’ potential as well as their hard work.

“Students have lived up to our school vision of being ‘inspired to excel’ and I feel really proud.”

She added: “We have a fantastic team of staff here and our relentless work to ensure we provide a really great education for each and every one of our students has paid dividends. We are all celebrating.”

Lucy Conibear and Jessica Shaw were the school’s highest achieving pupils with both gaining nine A*s and two As.

Jessica, 16, who will now go on to study A-levels at Katharine Lady Berkeley sixth form in Wotton-under-Edge, said the results were roughly what she had been expecting.

Her mum Karen told the Gazette: “I am so proud. This week she had a lot of anxiety over whether she would do well.”

Ewen Keates, 16, said he was shocked to have received six A*s, four As and one B.

“I am not in the top set for most of those subjects so it is a big shock,” he said.

“I honestly didn’t have a clue I had done this well.”

Ewen, from Yate, said he would be reconsidering his options now he had exceeded his own expectations.

Students from disadvantaged backgrounds also did well at Brimsham with 60 per cent of targeted students achieving five or more A* to C grades.

Added Ms Garland: “It is morally right that students do equally well, regardless of their background.”
