A RUNNER from Wotton-under-Edge is going to tackle his hardest challenge yet - 100 miles in honour of his mum who was given the all clear from breast cancer three years ago.

Harry Morgan, 23, of Wotton, will run the entire 102 miles of the Cotswold Way over a period of four days beginning on September 30.

He has already raised £1,500 for Breast Cancer Unit Support Trust (BUST) Bristol, who offer support to those affected by the illness at Southmead Hospital.

“Doing a fundraiser like this is something that I’ve been planning for a long time, but isn’t something I’ve gotten round to due to being away at university,” said Harry.

“But I always knew that I would do something and I knew that it needed to be something really monumental.”

Harry’s mum Julie was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012 and was given the all clear by the end of that year, but the news still came as quite a shock.

“I wasn’t made aware of it for quite a while because my parents thought it might distract me from work at university, so I wasn’t told until just before she was given the all clear,” he said.

“It was caught very early on so it was generally quite optimistic, but it was still a very surreal experience.

“The main thing is it made me want to give something back.”

Harry has been doing a lot of training for his Cotswold Way run, a solo trip of his own devising that will take him from Chipping Camden to Bath, passing through Wotton, Dursley and Stroud on the way and using his Wotton home as a base camp to return to in the evenings.

“It only recently dawned on me how close it’s getting,” said Harry.

“The distance isn’t as much of an issue as the terrain, and the fact I’ll be running on tired legs. The first and last day should be alright but I think the days in the middle will be difficult.”
