A FILM depicting Yate’s history is being re-released to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the town’s shopping centre.

1st Take, a film company based in Yate, made its very production in 1993 entitled Yate, A Surprising History.

The film makers sought help from local historian Jim Elsworth.

He said: “For many years I have been giving illustrated talks and slides shows on local history about the Yate and Sodbury area.

“Around 20 years ago, after one talk in Yate, I was approached by Andy Warren and Dave Rogers suggesting that I should put the material used in my slide shows onto a video format. At first I was reluctant as I didn’t think it would be a success.

“After repeated pestering by Andy and Dave I agreed to have a go. But still I was doubtful that it would be a success. Well, they were right I was wrong.”In fact, the film which detailed Yate’s changing face and buildings including the opening of the shopping centre in 1965, sold very well and has since been transferred from VHS to DVD.

It was not long, however, until Yate’s expansion warranted another film. In 2008 Yate, More than a New Town was made and this time Yate Heritage Centre officer David Hardill stepped into the presenter’s role.

Any Warren, owner of 1st Take, said: “The first film was very well received by locals and still remains a very interesting documentary, written and presented by Jim Elsworth.

“In 2008, David Hardill of Yate Heritage Centre approached us asking to make another film on the area, Yate, More than a New Town with the help of photographic and film images from the Heritage Centre.

“1st Take has gone on to make 100 documentaries on many subjects including the Battle of Britain, Lost Villages, Concorde Homecoming and Britains first popular small car,the Morris Minor.”

He added: “The shopping centre is featured strongly on both films. The Jim Elsworth collection illustrates the land mass prior to development, and some of the early construction along North Walk.

“Some of the early signage that depicts the 1960s is shown in detail. Also the arrival of Pat Phoenix, the Coronation Street star, is featured thanks to the donation of a film from a Yate resident.”

Both films are now available again and mark the 50th anniversary of the shopping centre, which was opened on September 25, 1965.The DVDs are available at Yate Heritage Centre, the Tourist Information Office in Chipping Sodbury or Chipping Sodbury Post Office or see our reader offer in last week’s Gazette or call 01454 321614 or email info@1st-take.com
