A RETIRED doctor from Pitchcombe is drawning on his healthcare background in his new occupation as a novelist.

Former consultant neurologist Harvey Sagar has written two medically-themed novels: Teddy Bear’s Triumph and Dry Out!
Both books take readers on a journey through the wards and clinics of hospitals in the company of some very unusual characters.
Teddy Bear’s Triumph is a semi-autobiographical account of the journey of a hospital doctor from childhood aspirations to practising consultant in neurology. The book relates the author’s amusing anecdotes on people and events around him as he progresses through medical education, junior doctor training and consultancy.
Readers are given an insight into the ups and downs of relationships with patients, nurses, consultants and other hospital staff and describes experiences in out-patient clinics, ward work and emergency on call.
Dry Out! tells the story of a group of people who come together to form a new charity devoted to medical problems linked to alcohol and plan a day of fund-raising in the hospital grounds.
He said: “I used to share the humorous, as well as sad, experiences I had as a doctor by talking to other staff and I would often say that I should write a book about things that had happened and things people said.  One day, I thought, “Well, why not just do it?”
Although new to humorous fiction, this isn’t the first time Harvey has taken up writing.
He added: “I have spent most of my working life writing medical and scientific articles and chapters and a book about Parkinson’s disease for patients and carers.  I have written humorous poetry intermittently, just for fun, but I started to write fiction as I was approaching retirement.”
