AN ACTION group objecting to the proposal for a new crematorium for Thornbury is encouraging local people to voice their concerns.

The Crematorium Residents Action Group (CRAG) consists of over 20 residents who are against Thornbury Crematorium Ltd’s plan to build a crematorium on land off Alveston Hill.

It is now encouraging residents and others who will be affected to contact local councils to express their opinions before further plans are made.

In a statement, the group said: “We've heard from many people who oppose the siting of a crematorium on green belt land beside the busy B4061.

"It's important to make your views heard preferably before any formal planning application is made to South Gloucestershire Council (SGC), as well as afterwards.

“Once any application is made by the developers you can make your objections known to those who will take the decision at SGC.”

Thornbury Crematorium Ltd community engagement consultant, Jenny Gee told the Gazette the no firm decision has been made as to when and whether a planning application will be forthcoming.

“The landowner and professional team is very aware of the issues relating to the potential development of a crematorium at this site and is the reason that early pre-application consultation has been undertaken with the council, local community and other key stakeholders,” she added.
