A COFFEE morning in aid of Syrian refugees tomorrow (Friday, October 16) will kick start two weeks of fundraising in Yate.

The fortnight of events is the idea of Yate Town Council, rector Rev Ian Wallace and Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club and is aimed at raising money for the British Red Cross Syrian crisis appeal.

The coffee morning takes place in Poole Court tomorrow (10am-12noon) with Yate mayor Cllr Tony Davis. Donations of cakes are being welcomed.

Members of the public are being asked to support the two weeks of fundraising by coming up with ideas of other events and organising their own.

A spokesman for the town council said: “Yate Town Council has come together with Yate parish and Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club to support the initiative of two weeks of fundraising within the community, aimed at collecting cash to go directly to the British Red Cross Syria Crisis Appeal.

“Community organisations, schools, retailers, churches, companies, clubs and individuals are encouraged to do whatever they can to raise cash for the Red Cross appeal. This enables the charity to respond to the most urgent needs on the spot.”

Ideas for fundraising include a pub quiz night, coffee mornings, themed parties, car wash or school mufti days.

The fortnight runs from October 16 to 30. Call Yate Town Council on 01454 866506 with details of any fundraising event for information on where to send money raised.
