PEOPLE in Yate and Chipping Sodbury will pay their respects to those who lost their lives in battle at Remembrance Sunday services this weekend.

In Chipping Sodbury, the community is expected to turn out in force as it has done in previous years to honour those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in two world wars and more recent conflicts.

A special outdoor service will take place on Sunday, November 8 at 3pm at the town’s war memorial on Broad Street. It will be preceded by a parade down the High Street, leaving Rounceval Street at 2.15pm.

Local veterans and serving members of the Armed Forces are invited to join the parade and service. Anyone who wishes to take part is asked to contact the clerk to Sodbury Town Council via admin@sodburytowncouncil.gov.uk or telephone 01454 321336.

Chipping Sodbury High Street and Broad Street will be closed to vehicles and parking between 1pm and 4pm on the day and the public are requested to remove vehicles from the pitchings prior to the road closure.

In Yate, St Mary’s Church is expected to be packed as people come together to remember the fallen on Remembrance Sunday.

The town council is organising the annual parade from Poole Court on Sunday, November 8 (9.15am) to the church where a service of remembrance will take place.

The parade will include members of the Royal British Legion, local dignitaries as well as Scouts, Guides and Air Cadets.

The church service will be followed by wreaths being laid at the Lych Gate and the sounding of the Last Post. There will also be a short act of remembrance at the town’s Parnall grave, which honours the 55 men and women who died when German bombers attacked the former Parnall factory on Station Road in 1941.

Afterwards, refreshments will be served in the Old School Building at St Mary’s Youth Centre. All are welcome.

In Westerleigh, a service will be held at St James’ Church at 10am with Westerleigh Brass Band, followed by a Remembrance gathering around the village war memorial at 10.50am and a two-minute silence marked by a bugle.

Iron Acton will mark Remembrance Sunday with a service for all ages at St James the Less Church at 9.30am, followed by an act of Remembrance. Services are also being held at Holy Trinity Church in Wickwar (10.50am) and Holy Trinity Rangeworthy (10.50am) on Remembrance Sunday.
